Did you spend 5 minutes in the shower calculating the risk of calling-in sick?
Did you spend 30 minutes enduring traffic hoping that you can get to work and back home today without spending a small fortune on gas?
Have you just returned to your desk after listening to a self-important ego-maniac give you a list of dumb, ill-conceived, and barely workable “brilliant ideas” to do?
I’ve been there my friend.
I spent 17 years in the “agency business”. Every day was worse than the last. My angst had a lot to do with more personality. I hate authority and I have a severe allergic reaction to bull dung. My symptoms are shouting, depression and imagining new ways to curl up in a fetal position under my desk.
Pushing Social saved me.
In 2010 I started Pushing Social with two goals: (1) Write a book and (2) Escape from hell (AKA: My Job).
I gave myself 5 years to achieve both goals. I had failed at similar quests before but this time I used a radically different approach.
I armed myself with over a year of research on how to grow a new blog into a full-time business.
I became obsessed with setting goals, testing, and execution. Specifically, I followed a 7-step roadmap that quickly grew Pushing Social from a few readers a week to 15,000 visitors a month. Put a pin in that one – we’ll get back to it in a second.
I stepped outside of my introvert comfort zone and began creating relationships with awesome people around the world. I became very good at building win-win relationships with key influencers in my niche.
I shifted my mindset from getting lucky to manufacturing opportunity.
I purged my thinking of feel-good advice masquerading as strategy. Stuff like: “Write when you have something to say.” “Give until it hurts.” “People will find your great content” and other drivel that sunk two other blogs I had tried to start.
I put my head down for three years and didn’t look up until a week ago. Suddenly it hit me that I needed new goals. With the help and guidance of my friend and co-author, Mark Schaefer I had a published book. August 1st marks the 1-year anniversary of Pushing Social “The Business” – no longer a part-time blog but a full-time business.
You Can Escape the Job too…
Next week, I will be sharing my 7 Step Plan for Turning Your Part-Time Blog into a Full Time Business in a special live webinar.
If this post hit a nerve then you should attend. I will be giving the webinar twice to make it easier for my overseas friends to join us. Click on the date and time that works for you:
I will also be giving away a mindmap of my 7-Step process to everyone that attends the webinar.
We’re going to have some fun. I look forward to seeing you next week.
