What Pushing Social Is All About

This blog worries me. In many ways it’s an experiment that could go horribly wrong.  But, I’ve gotta take a shot.

Let me explain myself…

The digital world doesn’t need another traditional social media marketing blog.  A lot of smart guys and gals are doing the social evangelist thing.  That’s not what Pushing Social is intending to do.  The “Why You Should Do Social Media” question is getting all the pixels it deserves.

If you need to get the Social Media religion check out Gary Vaynerchuk, GoingSocialNow, and others.  These guys are killing it.

PushingSocial is About Making Social Media Marketing Pay

It’s all about the Benjamins  baby.

In my opinion, the Social Media honeymoon is over.  Sure we’ve got a lot of folks super excited.  Tweets are racing to the 4 corners of the earth.  Facebook has captured the eyeballs of zillions and the train has left the station.

Now, let’s start asking (and answering) the hard questions.

What is a tweet worth?

Should you invest in 1 influencer or 1 customer?

Is Social Media worth doing if your email program is struggling?

Does it pay to invest in Facebook ads when your pay-per-click program is struggling?

Where does Social Media go on your P&L?

When do you REDUCE your investment in social media?

How do you tell know if your social media investment is worth the fan page it’s typed on?

Tough questions.  Unpopular questions. Necessary questions.

The good news is that…finding answers to these questions is critical for us marketers.  If we don’t get this revolution right – we’ll get kicked to the curb permanently.  Social Media is probably the LAST media “inflection point” and we’ve got a lot riding on this one.  It’s time to get serious about turning this space into something that can justify it’s place at the grown-up table.

What does this look like?

Here’s what we’re pushing for (pun intended).

  • Real Thought Leadership about How to Make MONEY with Social Media (if it’s about being famous let’s ship the conversation to James Cameron he’s better at this sort of thing).
  • Serious business models that CEOs can understand…
  • A point of view that’s more survives an excel spreadsheet.

This is what I’m obsessed with and what Pushing Social is all about.

P.S. I mentioned that this blog may crash and burn.  This is just the realist in me talking. Hundreds of thousands of blogs sprouted up just today.  It’s fantastically ambitious to say that this one is going to add to the zeitgeist.  But, I  have something to say and I believe you ought’a listen. That’s how this stuff starts…right?
