Is your blog paying for itself? Can you rely on your blog to add a few hundred dollars to the monthly budget?
I asked my subscribers this question and I received an almost unanimous response –
That answer freaked me out because blogs were supposed to be the “easy”, “authentic”, and “non-salesy” way to finally earn an income online. It looks like something went wrong.
I believe that most blogs are struggling to pay the bills because:
1. They Don’t Offer Enough Content:
Your readers have a buffet of excellent content choices to choose from. Unfortunately they are still working with the same 24 hours as you do. The only way to break through the clutter is by constantly producing content that get noticed and shared.
Right now it seems that the best blogs are publishing 3-4 times a week. This may not be the right frequency for you. But you need to test and find out. This means that you’ll need to increase your frequency for a couple of weeks and check your performance.
2. They Are Crippled By Careless or Cheap Graphics:
Creating a professional, attractive and functional blog is getting easier. In most cases you can launch a decent looking blog for under $100.
Unfortunately the lure of “free” still entraps people who prefer to step over a dime to snatch a penny. There’s one iron-clad rule that I’ve seen proven again and again – people won’t buy if they are shopping in an outhouse – or – trashy blogs don’t sell.
3. Their Authors Are Afraid to Sell:
Your readers want to buy something from you. They are wondering when you’ll realize that and get to work.
Listen. You deserve to get paid for information or products that deliver tangible value. Your blog posts are “samples” that the public can read and use. Everything else is fair game for a price tag.
Create a product and start selling it at full price right now. Promote it to your email list (yes you need to start one), after every post, and in your sidebar. Be proud of your content and be bold with your marketing. That is the only way to start earning a reliable income with your blog.
3 Profitable Tweaks You Can Make Right Now
- Add an entry level offer to all of your “Thank You” pages. Thank you pages are designed to confirm a transaction and deliver a product. This product can be free or paid. These pages are easy ways to turn a free transaction into a paid one.
Offer a simple, inexpensive, entry-level product to see which of your readers are willing to invest in your content.
- Write 12 promotional emails, load them into your autoresponder, schedule one of the 12 to be sent once a month for the next 12 months. These emails should follow a specific outline:
- Here’s Your Problem
- Here’s What I’ve Got To Solve It
- Here’s How You Get it.
Keep the emails short and concise. Make sure you link them to a landing page that offers more information and completes the sale.
Doing this will put your income producing activities on autopilot. Remember you deserve to be paid for excellent information or products.
- Offer 3rd-party products that you believe in.
I’m a big fan of Studiopress, LeadPages, LeadPlayer, and other well-designed marketing tools. I’ve signed up for their “affiliate” programs and earn cash when people buy them based on my recommendation. Every month I get a surprise commission check in the mail. I’m happy because someone bought a great product and someone else paid me for the referral.
Look for opportunities to recommend products that you use and enjoy. Sign-up for their affiliate programs and consistently use their tracking link when you promote the product. This may not be a huge source of income but it’s a great way to monetize your blog posts without wallpapering your blog with garish Adsense ads.
I get to talk with a lot of people who are trying to start or grow a business with blogs.. The ones that are struggling are waiting for some magic moment to begin promoting themselves and their products. My advice is always the same – start selling something today.
