What do you believe about the world that your competitors do not?
Your answer will reveal your organization’s core values. For example, I believe that everyone can create compelling and useful content. This belief inspired me to write Born to Blog. I’ve written over 700 articles, dozens of videos, podcasts, and more to help my readers and clients tap into their innate talent for story based content.
I’ve observed that businesses that ignore or disregard this question are held hostage to whims, me-too marketing, and lukewarm results. Core values, not tools and apps, are the key to true thought leadership, inspiring culture, and superior results.
Laura and I talk about the power of core-value driven marketing in Episode 33 of The Marketing Huddle.
Marketing From Your Strengths
What are you good at? Let me rephrase that, what can you do effortlessly that others struggle with?
For example, my wife, Tammy, is a clutch decision maker. As the pressure climbs, she gets sharper, more decisive, and proactive. She intuitively picks the right path. It’s amazing to see. I would rather think through the problem. I get to the right decision in triple the time it takes Tammy. This is why Tammy is an Emergency Room social worker and I am a business strategist.
Now, common wisdom would say that I should focus on building my quick response decision-making capability. Articles like “How to Make The Right Decision Faster” would be offered as the best place to start. This approach, however, is a waste of time. I don’t have Tammy’s strength. She doesn’t have mine. So why waste time on our weaknesses when we could better leverage our strengths.
You might be trapped in this weakness-first thinking. If so, I recommend you set-aside time today to listen to Episode 32 of The Marketing Huddle. Laura and I discuss a tool we used to identify our strengths and how we’ve used our strengths to revamp how we approach marketing.
